Let's Understand What is Cornea (Keratoconus & Treatments)

The peripheral layer of the eye is called Cornea. It is one of the fundamental parts of the natural eye as it permits the light to go into the eye for us to have a vision. A cornea is generally 12mm long and 11mm in height. The cornea additionally contributes towards around 70% of the centering force of the eye. That is the main reason why it is imperative to take care of the corneas. Refractive issues like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism are caused because of an adjustment of the state of the cornea.

Keratoconus is a progressive disease of the eye in which the cornea becomes thin and begins to bulge into a conical shape. This results in irregular refraction of light rays entering the eye, resulting in blurred, distorted vision and a high astigmatic error (high cylindrical power of glasses). It usually affects both eyes, although only one eye may be affected initially.

Cornea Transplant Surgeries at Visioncare SSEH Meerut

Cornea transplant surgery involves surgical removal of the unhealthy cornea (either total or partial) and replacing it with a healthy, transparent donor cornea (complete or partial). A cornea transplant surgery is also known as keratoplasty. Our surgeons discuss possible treatment options with the patient and decide on the choice of the corneal transplant procedure, depending on the disease entity.

Types of cornea transplant surgery available at Visioncare Super Speciality Eye Hospital Meerut:

Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK)

Penetrating Keratoplasty is also known as a full-thickness corneal transplant. It involves the replacement of the whole diseased cornea with the healthy corneal tissue.

Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK, DMEK, PDEK):

Endothelial Keratoplasty is another type of partial-thickness corneal transplant surgery which addresses posterior corneal pathologies. Part of the posterior diseased cornea is replaced with healthy donor posterior cornea. These are highly specialized surgeries, in certain conditions like Fuchs corneal dystrophy, where only the endothelial cell layer (the innermost layer of the cornea responsible for maintaining corneal transparency) is non-functional, only the endothelial cell layer will be transplanted. This means replacing only diseased corneal layers and leaving behind an intact anterior (front part) cornea which leads to faster visual rehabilitation.

Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK, DALK)

Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty is a type of partial-thickness corneal transplant surgery that is done to replace the anterior diseased corneal tissue with healthy and transparent donor tissue. This corneal transplant surgery aims to preserve the back part of the cornea.

Types of Corneal Disorders

Keratitis

Aggravation of the cornea which prompts redness, enlarging and ulcer arrangement is known as keratitis. The most widely recognized reason for keratitis is contact focal point incited contamination in urban India and vegetative injury in farmland, in rural India.

Dry eye

Dry eye is a typical condition that happens when tear creation is restricted by specific nearby, foundational and hormonal problems. It prompts a consistent redness, consuming, unfamiliar body sensation and intolerance to digital devices like computers & mobiles.

Corneal Dystrophies

Corneal dystrophies are the group of genetic conditions, which runs in a family, results from the deposition of material in a transparent cornea making it translucent to opaque. Corneal dystrophies with compromised corneal clarity lead to a drastic decrease in the quality of vision. Some of the most common corneal dystrophies are Epithelial basement membrane dystrophy, Fuchs corneal dystrophy & Macular corneal dystrophy.

Ocular Herpes

Also known as Herpes of the eye. The infection is caused by herpes simplex virus I (HSV I). Ocular herpes leads to painful blisters on the eyelids and inflammation of all the layers of the eye. It is notorious for relapses & recurrences if not treated appropriately.

Infections

Trachoma, an eye infection of its kind, is one of the significant reasons for corneal scarring and has blinded millions of people so far. Apart from trachoma, other bacteria, fungi, and viruses lead their way up to blindness.

Trauma

Eye trauma accounts for a considerable scale of corneal blindness every year around the world. Ocular trauma at the workplace is the most common factor which deserves attention and calls for better safety measures.
